Prep Your House for Winter
With the cold weather quickly approaching, it is important to ensure you prep your long island home sufficiently before the harsh cold and heavy snowfalls of winter. This time of year keeps us busy with holiday prepping but these simple tips will ensure your house is ready in no time!
Winter is Coming
Even if the weather is sunny and you haven’t worn that heavy coat just yet, that first dusting will be here before you know it! Your house (and peace of mind) will benefit from these quick tips!
Tips for the Exterior of Your Home
Check doors and windows and caulk to prevent drafts. This also prevents heat from escaping.
Replace any damaged, missing or loose shingles. This will prevent leaks from winter storms.
Clear your gutters! Clogged rain gutters can cause ice dams, which can lead to expensive repairs.
Repair roof leaks. Trim down tree branches that can be weighed down from ice or snow.
Drain your irrigation system. Even buried irrigation lines can freeze, leading to busted pipes and broken sprinkler heads.
Add extensions to your gutter downspouts so that water runs at least 3 to 4 feet away from the foundation.
Tips for the Interior of Your Home
Don’t ignore the inside of your home because this is equally important as the exterior for winter preparedness:
Wrap water pipes with insulation sleeves because this will prevent busted pipes.
Tune up your heating system now because you don’t want to be stuck in the middle of a storm waiting on a repairman!
Clean and/or replace your air filters.
Clean your fireplace and chimney. A clogged fireplace will not function as well; additionally a dirty chimney poses a fire hazard.
Enjoy Yourself!
Finally, don’t forget to embrace the white flakes and enjoy yourself! Make a snowman and engage in a snowball fight. Sled down the hills in our many parks! Long Island has plenty of beauty throughout and exciting events to enjoy. Additionally, check out a great guide to fun this season here.
