Whether you are planning a stay-cation or have a free weekend, Long Island has plenty to offer. Here are some greats ideas of what to do with kids on Long Island:
Hiking
Whether in Nassau or Suffolk County, there are beautiful parks and spaces to explore on Long Island…that are free! Check out Sweetbriar Nature Center, Muttontown Preserve, Trail View State Park, Avalon Park and Preserve, Massapequa Preserve.
Children’s Book Readings
Rainy day? Need to escape the heat? Check the local bookstores for free book readings. Sometimes there are also author signings? For example, Book Revue in Huntington frequently schedules book readings.
Zoo
The Town of Brookhaven/Holtsville Ecology Site, Park & Animal Preserve includes a zoo with free admission. The hours change with the seasons so call for hours before you go.
Museum
The Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences offers free admission and is open all year, 9-5 Monday-Friday. They are located at Stony Brook University. The American Guitar Museum (New Hyde Park) and The African American Museum of Nassau County (Hempstead) also offer free admission.
The Duck!
The Big Duck located in Flanders, is available for viewing and pictures at any time. There is also a gift shop. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Aircraft
Grumman Memorial Park (Calverton) displays actual aircraft. It pays tribute to aviation advances that took place on Long Island.
The Library
Don’t forget your local library! Most libraries offer scheduled, free entertainment including concerts, shows, and crafts.
